10 Best Emo Christmas Songs

When it comes to the 10 best emo Christmas songs, the list is as diverse as emo people themselves. Yes, there is common ground, but people who identify as emo are an eclectic group. The term "emo" has come to be known more for its culture, yet emo is a style of dark rock music. Emo is associated with a sad sort of perspective on life as well. Some of these songs are traditionally and obviously emo, while others are accepted as such when given a chance by enthusiasts of the genre.
  1. "What's This?" by Fall Out Boy is an angst-ridden, yet somehow fun, Christmas tune. It's emo at its core, and yet Disney fans will recognize the song from "The Nightmare Before Christmas."
  2. "I Won't Be Home for Christmas" by Blink-182 may make you cry, before it makes you angry. This song became a number one hit in Canada, yet it didn't chart elsewhere. You want to think like Canadians did, and give this song a chance. In short, "I Won't Be Home for Christmas" is the story of a man who is not in the Christmas spirit, to put it mildly, and attacks a group of carolers, only to end up in jail, where he is, in turn, attacked by a cell mate.
  3. "All I Want for Christmas Is You" by Chemical Romance is an exuberant emo Christmas song. Yes, it's a cover of a Mariah Carey hit holiday tune, but the strong rock band puts their own spin and perspective of this seasonal favorite.
  4. "The Christmas Song" by Weezer is another strong song for the holiday season. While the lyrics may be bitter at first, the song is ultimately cathartic and easy for almost any emo spirit to enjoy.
  5. "War Is Over" by the Used is a quintessential emo Christmas tune. It brings memories of John Lennon and his "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" collaboration with his love, Yoko Ono. However, the song is made uniquely the Used's own as well.
  6. "Merry Christmas, Darling" by the Carpenters is a hauntingly beautiful holiday song. Most people know the story of Karen Carpenter, including her tragic early death from anorexia when she was only in her early thirties. Her voice is deep on many levels, and it is pristine in this emo Christmas song.
  7. "Did I Make You Cry on Christmas Day? (Well, You Deserved It) by Sufjan Stevens has a song title that says it all. It's emotional and dark holiday fare.
  8. Emery's "The Last Christmas" is a holiday song like no other. It's part love song, part longing song, yet a definite holiday tune. It's also dark and with an emo feel.
  9. "Everytime It Snows" is a beautiful ballad by Olivia Newton-John from her album, "Christmas Wish." It's a song of heartbreak and remembering the one you love and lost at Christmas.
  10. "Last Christmas" by Jimmy Eat World is a rocking cover of the classic Wham Christmas song. Who doesn't remember lyrics like, "Last Christmas, I gave you my heart. The very next day, you gave it way." It's a great addition to any emo holiday playlist.
